Not sure if anyone still reads this community, but I'll give it a go.

I got a sudden urge to play Riven again, but when I inserted the disk, I was sad to find that it's not compatible with Windows 7. I've tried running it in Compatibility Mode, but it still won't play.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get it to run?

Mysterium 2011 - an Announcement

Shorah Again

How have you been? We’ve been *really* busy, preparing some Mysterium news for you!

Mini no more?
Given the numbers we got on our polls, we have decided to drop the ‘mini’. This is now a full-on Mysterium, with support from some members of the normal Mysterium Committee. That said, we are still running from our own website (http://mysterium.zibland.com/), and questions should be sent to our Digital Non-sentient Indicator (or D’NI for short) at committee@mysterium.zibland.com.

Logo Contest
Do you have 1337 art skills? Do you love Amateria? Did you skip those last two questions? Then have we got a contest for you!

The Mysterium logo contest is a go! See mysterium.zibland.com/ for details. The contest runs until May 7th.

Hotel and Dates
We are still working like mad to finalize the hotel details, but we do have a date! Mysterium Boston will take place August 5-7 (that’s the first weekend in August). As usual, there will be an informal hullabaloo on Thursday night for those who are there, but the con itself is Friday-Sunday.

Registration
We will open registration once we finalize the hotel. Since people have been asking though, we wanted to cover it here. We are planning to use a similar pricing schedule to recent Mysteriums (Mysteria?). Somewhere around $20 for the weekend, with day passes and probably an early-bird discount.

Presentations
Got a new age to show? Have you written a dissertation on D’ni architecture through the ages (see what I did there)? Did you re-create the cavern in chocolate? Then why not tell a subset of the world about it by presenting? We are now taking submissions for presentations. Simply send a brief description of the presentation to the committee (committee@mysterium.zibland.com). Presentation submissions are open until June 3.

Faecbooks
No longer must you leave Facebook to find out what’s new with Mysterium. Just join the Mysterium Boston Facebook page here for all your Mysterium news.

Contributions
If you recently found yourself thinking, “gee, I have this money just sitting here. I sure wish I could use it to make Mysterium Boston the very best (like no Mysterium ever was)”... well then you should probably talk to someone about that. But first, click on our fancy new Contribute button on the right of the site (http://mysterium.zibland.com/).

Contributions are, of course, totally optional and much appreciated. Even five bucks helps us to cover costs. And we’ll totally find some cool* way to thank you at the con!

*Note: “cool” is a subjective term, subject to multiple definition syndrome.

Potato
Potatoes are not related to Mysterium, as far as we know. We’ll keep you apprised of Potato related activities as and if they develop. Please note that the Committee is not responsible for any Potato related accidents that may occur as a result of its actions. Un-registered Companion Potatoes may be euthanized at the discretion of [REDACTED].

As always, please post or email any questions or comments you have about the wonderful world of Mysterium. Until next time,

-The Mysterium Boston Committee

Rather than sit around waiting for news that will probably never come, a few of us have decided to band together and make something happen! We’re planning a mini-Mysterium in Boston, MA, but we need your input before we can really get planning.

We have two polls up on our site here, and your answers will help us figure out how many people to expect and when people can come. Aka, we need to know if we should book a closet or a palace. So, if you’re interested in attending our version of a Mysterium, please let us know by answering those polls.

The polls will close at midnight on April 16th, so spread the word to your friends.
Myst to be playable at the Smithsonian videogame exhibition

(crossposted for laziness from the Guild of Messengers)

As reported by most gaming sites, the Smithsonian American Art Museum is preparing an exhibition that intends to "explore the 40-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, with a focus on striking visual effects, the creative use of new technologies, and the most influential artists and designers". It will be the first of its kind to appear in such a prestigious institution and may go great lengths to improve the status of videogames as a form of creative expression.

The museum is asking the public to elect the games that will be shown, arranging its nominations in an online poll (link below).

Myst is notably absent from the poll, that covers more than 200 games from the '70s to present day. Partly prompted by the Mysteriacs in their latest blog entry, many fans questioned the decision. A quick reply came from the organizers, stating that Myst is absent from the poll only because it is one of the few games that will skip qualifications and be shown no matter what. The other 'sure' games are currently unknown (their fanbases being less enthusiastic, apparently :p ).

Replying to my question as to whether the news could be shared with the community at large, curator Georgina answered:

"You may let people know that Myst will be included in the exhibition! It will actually be one of 5 playable games."

Voting will be open until April 7th, results will be made public in May, while the exhibition itself is slated for 2012.

...Colour me enthusiastic :D And don't forget to vote! I'm placing bets for the Chrono Trigger VS Zelda alttp showdown... and, against my own fandom, hoping that Okami will prevail against FFX, but I'm not holding my breath for that one... poor Okami.
(Is it just me, or does the inclusion of ET costitute a prime example of institutional trolling?)

Edit: don't forget to vote here, obviously. Silly me.

D'ni personified?

Debated for a while whether or not to post this here, but here goes...

Some while ago I had an interesting discussion about the anthropomorphic personifications of countries, which then turned into a discussion of personifications of fictional countries/people. Obviously the first people to come into my mind was the D'ni, and I started to wonder what their anthropomorphic personification might look like, if they'd ever had one.

Although my drawing style is not very Myst-like, you could say, I tried to include as much relevant symbolism as possible.

I wanted to achieve a feeling similar to Gehn's glass paintings in Riven. I thought that a personification of the D'ni should look very intelligent and civilised in a way, considering the Art was a very high form of culture, but not particularly gentle, considering that slavery and discrimination of foreign races/species was a strong dark side of the D'ni society.

Aaand symbolism... Not my forte, really, but the tree both in the background and on her clothes refers to the Great Tree of Possibilities, the books on her sides are, well, linking books, and the coloured lining of her cape refers to the 18 major guilds of the D'ni city.

... Hm. Yeah, don't want to babble on endlessly, but I hope this is relevant enough to Myst universe to be posted on the community? And also, in the case I won't be hammered to death, I was planning on designing a personification for Releeshahn as well, and would love if people could throw in some suggestions (even Mystlore doesn't have much info about the Age). From what I've thought up so far, Releeshahn would be a "child" of the D'ni, in its way, but not as closed-minded and hierarchical. Visually I was thinking something similar to the contrast between Middle Age and Renaissance art...? If that makes any sense. :'D

Okay, that's it about the picture, but since I finally got my copy of the Myst Reader, I have a question about that. Apparently the three books are included in the order of their publishing year (Book of Atrus, Book of Ti'ana, Book of the D'ni), but the chronological order of the plot is different, isn't it? So, would you suggest first skipping to Ti'ana, then return to Atrus, and only then read the D'ni, or does the order matter that much?
